Remote Relief: How to Handle a Diverticulitis Emergency Offshore

An expansive offshore wind farm with several wind turbines on a calm sea under a clear blue sky.

The Critical Moment

An offshore renewable energy platform, located approximately 200km from the nearest port, faced a sudden medical challenge. A 56-year-old worker began experiencing severe lower abdominal pain. The patient had a history of diverticulitis 14 years prior and was experiencing persistent discomfort that was not relieved by initial treatment by the onsite nurse. Recognizing the need for further assessment, the Nurse decided to contact PRAXES for expert medical guidance.

The Initial Assessment

The Nurse was promptly connected with a PRAXES Emergency Doctor, who responded calmly and efficiently. The Doctor conducted a thorough assessment by collecting the patient’s medical history, current symptoms, and vital signs.

  • Temperature: 37°
  • Pulse: 85bpm
  • Blood Pressure: 123/88
  • Oxygen Saturation: 98% RA

Given the patient’s previous history and current symptoms, the Doctor suspected a flare-up of diverticulitis.

The Recommended Treatment Plan

Drawing on the information provided, the PRAXES Emergency Doctor offered clear guidance on maintaining the patient’s current medications and managing symptoms on-site. The Doctor prescribed:

  • Ciprofloxacin and Metronidazole to treat the suspected diverticulitis flare-up.
  • Gravol and Tylenol for pain and nausea management.

All required medications were available in the PRAXES medical kit onboard. The nurse was instructed to monitor the patient closely and report any changes or worsening symptoms.

Positive Outcome with Minimal Disruption

Thanks to rapid telemedicine support, the patient was treated effectively onsite, avoiding the need for an unnecessary and costly evacuation. The Nurse was able to provide evidence-based care, and the patient’s symptoms were managed safely.
