Yachting & Travel Case Study

Your Voyage, Protected with Expert Medical Care Anytime, Anywhere

Luxury yacht anchored amidst the stunning cliffs of Escorca, Palma de Mallorca. Perfect vacation escape.

The Critical Moment

A luxury superyacht sailing in the Mediterranean contacted PRAXES for urgent telemedicine support. A 32-year-old deckhand had cracked a lower right tooth. While there was no swelling or fever, the incident occurred mid-charter with guests on board and several days remaining at sea. No medical professional was present – only the Captain and First Mate, who held advanced marine first aid certifications.

With approximately 10 crew members and 12 guests, the yacht was not scheduled to dock until the following week. Diverting the yacht or changing the itinerary due to the dental emergency risked disrupting the guests’ luxury experience and incurring significant operational costs. PRAXES’ rapid telemedicine response ensured the crew could manage the situation effectively, maintaining both guest satisfaction and operational continuity.

The Initial Assessment

Within minutes, the Captain was connected with a PRAXES Emergency Physician. The crew member’s vital signs were checked and found to be stable. Using the PRAXES Connect web-based Electronic Medical Record (EMR) software, clear photos of the cracked tooth were securely uploaded for the Physician’s review. The images suggested the pain was likely due to a longstanding, untreated dental cavity that had progressively weakened the area, which was the source of the patient’s discomfort.

The Recommended Treatment Plan

To avoid disruption of the voyage, the PRAXES Physician, in consultation with the Captain and the crew member, developed an onboard treatment plan:

  • Pain management with medication from the onboard medical kit.
  • Regular saltwater rinses to keep the area clean.
  • Prophylactic antibiotics to reduce the risk of infection.

Using PRAXES Connect, the Physician viewed the onboard medical kit inventory to confirm the availability of required medications, including their exact location within the kit and expiry dates. This empowered the Captain to administer treatment efficiently and confidently.

The Physician also emphasized the importance of urgent dental follow-up upon arrival at port to prevent further complications and recommended a full oral health checkup. Dental issues are common among remote workers due to irregular schedules and limited access to routine care.

Positive Outcome with Minimal Disruption

Thanks to rapid intervention and an effective treatment strategy, the crew member remained onboard for the rest of the trip. No diversion or port return was necessary, and guests remained unaware of the incident. This preserved the full charter experience, avoided unnecessary fuel and logistical costs, and upheld the yacht’s commitment to luxury service.
