When should you be using telemedicine?
The Decision regarding when to use your telemedicine services can be a little confusing! So PRAXES put together a list of our own tips to help you through these situations should you ever find yourself in need of assistance.
What do you actually need to know?
We understand how it feels when you have a medical emergency at sea. Isolated. Scared. It’s overwhelming. Telemedicine services are there to support and guide you through what needs to be done. With over 20 years of experience in the industry we have compiled our top tips on how to use your telemedicine services to do the very best for your patient:
- Be able to do the basics well – PRAXES doctors don’t expect you to be an expert. You should know how to obtain simple vital signs and give a simple and accurate account of what is happening.
- Rather than spending a lot of money on high-tech gadgets – we suggest clients invest in general health and knowledge of their crew, things like first aid training, a proper medical kit for their vessel and voyage, access to a satellite phone and basic vital sign tools. When you are in a crisis you don’t want to waste time fussing with a machine you rarely use – stick to the basics and call for support.
- Phone early – Don’t wait and see how they get on. The doctor would prefer to give you prevention advice and what to watch for rather than waiting until it’s too late. Call early, call often.
- Practice on board – You may feel like you have things under control, but do you know how your crew will react in an emergency? What would happen if you went over-board?
- When in doubt, just ask – We continuously learn from your questions and calls. Don’t wait or hesitate, we are here for you 24/7.
